Why Move to Sheffield?

With its proud industrial history and thriving universities, the Sheffield of today promises green landscapes, diverse culture including an eclectic culinary scene, a vibrant nightlife and a captivating local music scene. Famous for its steel production, there truly is something for everyone in ‘The Steel City’.

Although it is the UK’s fifth largest city, it may surprise you to learn that in Sheffield, there are more trees per person than any city in Europe. The friendly locals and community spirit makes Sheffield a truly welcoming city, and strong creative and digital industry presence ensures that emerging talent is cultivated. Below are some of the most popular areas of Sheffield.

Kelham Island

Calling all coffee, food, drink, music and art lovers: Kelham Island could be the place for you. Previously one of Sheffield’s oldest manufacturing sites, Kelham Island was voted as one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods in 2022 by Time Out. The Kelham Island Museum offers a glimpse into the past for Sheffield’s industrial past, and the wide range of excellent eateries and indie bars makes Kelham Island a unique area of Sheffield.

Hillsborough

Whilst Hillsborough has maintained its own shopping district with a wide range of high street retailers, the area is experiencing the emergence of a fast-growing community of independent businesses. Various independent locations across Hillsborough offer high-quality and locally-sourced food and drink, with new developments giving the entire area a newfound vibrancy.

Crookes

If you are prepared to venture uphill to the areas of Crookes, Broomhill and Walkey, you will be greeted with a fantastic range of cafes, restaurants, bars, and shops. Along the main road through Crookes, take the time to visit the great array of independent shops, or head into one of the many outstanding pubs in the area.

Castlegate

Sheffield’s award-winning ‘Grey to Green‘ urban planting scheme has transformed areas of Castlegate entirely. Once the buzzing market centre for Sheffield, Castlegate became slightly neglected once the market was moved to the Moor in 2013. However, with the development of several major projects, Castlegate is now making a comeback. Visit Castlegate to enjoy Pollen Market, a monthly inner-city flower market, or visit the UK’s only purpose-built city centre skateboarding space.

Public Transport in Sheffield

  • A brand new addition to Sheffield’s already extensive public transport options is the Sheffield Connect, a free and fully electric bus offering quick and easy travel around the city centre. Running two services, SC1 and SC2, the SC1 buses run every 7-8 minutes, seven days a week.
  • Sheffield Train station also offers a wide range of transport options for journeys across the country, and the regular trams can take you to various locations all over Sheffield.
  • For drivers, making use of one of the eight park and ride sites outside the city centre makes visiting the centre of Sheffield far easier.
  • If you are regularly visiting the city centre of Sheffield, you may consider cycling as an alternative to public transport or driving. Various cycle routes around the city ensure that you can navigate safely and efficiently, and multiple bicycle pumps in useful locations are regularly maintained by local businesses in Sheffield.

Guide to Renting

When moving into a rental property, there are a number of considerations that you should think carefully about. For example:

  • Do you require a parking space?
  • How many bedrooms will you need?
  • If you are renting an unfurnished property, will your furniture fit?
  • How much storage space do you need?
  • Do you need a garden?
  • Are pets permitted?

Before you embark on your renting journey, take the time to consider the following information.

Renting Affordability

When signing for a rental property, take time to consider what you can reasonably afford. You will have the added costs for water, electricity, gas, council tax and broadband added on to the cost of monthly rent, so make sure to plan for these costs. You will also need to pay for a holding deposit and a tenancy deposit before your tenancy can begin.

Local Amenities

If you are commuting to work from your rental property, it will be important that appropriate transport links are available for your use. Consider the time of your journey, and how long it will reasonably take for you to travel from your home to work. A good idea might be to spend time in the local area to scope out public transport options, supermarkets, or any other amenities you may require.

Guarantors

You may need a guarantor to proceed with a rental agreement. Often a parent or guardian, a guarantor is chosen to take responsibility for the rent if a tenant fails to do so. Any damages may also be covered by a guarantor, and any rent arrears that are not covered by the tenant will also fall to the guarantor. To be accepted as a guarantor, they will need to complete the same referencing process as the tenant.
