Do you know what the potential risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters are? There has unfortunately been an increase in incidents related to these devices in Greater Manchester, so we want to share some important information with you on how you can stay safe if you own one.
A recent incident at a tower block in Salford, investigated by the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), shed light on the importance of caution. A fire, which occurred last December, was attributed to an e-bike battery that had been charging in a bedroom. The unfortunate event led to the evacuation of a portion of the building.
GMFRS has reported attending 14 fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters over the past year, surpassing the numbers from the previous years. While reputable manufacturers in the UK generally meet stringent safety regulations, there is a growing concern surrounding converter kits. These kits, available online, consist of lithium-ion battery packs that allow the conversion of regular bikes into e-bikes. However, it’s worth noting that these kits often do not meet UK safety regulations, posing an increased risk of fire.
In light of this, Plumlife Management strongly advises all customers with electric bikes or scooters to prioritise safety and follow the guidelines below:
By following these safety measures, you can enjoy your e-bike or scooter with peace of mind. Stay safe and have fun!
